Ian Ruff of Clemson University will share his brainstorming and decision-making hierarchy for custom art designs restricted to only using three spot colors. Successful designs depend in part on the creative approach of the designer to work within the constraints of the press capabilities as well as an understanding of the type of printing process being used. For this session Ian will demonstrate how three-color artwork can be enhanced through unique Illustrator techniques while staying within the production limitations of the flexographic printing press.

Today’s environment has pushed people to adapt much more quickly to living with virtual environments and interactions. Technology, software and hardware have made it easier to learn skills-based tasks in a virtual “hands-on” space. Join Nathan to see the possibilities of interactive training on a virtual press simulator.

Case Study: Process Color Matching When Restricted to Challenging Press Parameters

Join a team of Clemson graphic communications students as they map their journey through the print optimization and press characterization process to color match a waterbased flexo press and a UV flexo press. The students are faced with thought invoking challenges of working with a narrow width, uneven surfaced substrate to match graphics on either press. The choices of components … plate surface patterning or standard; soft, medium or firm stickyback; low, medium or high volume anilox rollers; ink order; test targets for the limited space; the best icc profile build… have to be sifted through. Learn how the students navigated the process for successful “customer” art.

Modified Process Colors in Flexographic Prepress

Ian Ruff of Clemson University will share his recipe for incorporating modified process colors into a prepress decision-making workflow. The world of packaging can at times demand creative problem-solving mindset by a print provider to meet customer expectations. Ian will show how he uses tools in Illustrator and Photoshop to successfully substitute spot colors for process colors to maintain brand identity while also utilizing the value of the appearance of process-built colors.
